My second car (and likely best value) was a 1963 Bel Air I bought for $70 from a college friend in 1975. Drove it for two years, back and forth to the west coast, and sold it to a friend at home for $70. He drove it for two years as an electrical apprentice, the sold it to $70 to a woman who ran it in the powderpuff demolition derbies. With 230ci 6 cyclinder and 2-speed Powerglide it was no race car, but certainly durable. Later I had a '66 Impala and still later a '66 Chevelle. Saw the USA in a Chevrolet, several times.

I too, after all these years, can sing the Beaty Alma Mater. You called it insipid, but I thought the words and tune, made it easy to remember. I don't every recall being able to sing the WAHS alma mater, and still can't.

My daughter was born just a few days before your son. As I read your post, it brought me back to those early days. Thank you for reminding me of those days. BTW, the last picture- we had a seat like that. When Mairin's younger sister was born,Mairin shot Nora out of the seat, after I had put Nora down after getting her coat on, to get the other 2 kids coats on.

I was graduated from WAHS in 1976. I guess that puts me in Beatty (7th grade) around 1971. I definitely recall Mrs. Hubbard as my math teacher and agree that she was fantastic. Thanks so much for this site and the memories!

I, too, atended Beaty at about the same time. A few of us boys had s secret crush on Miss Clepper, but aside from the classroom, we didn't know much more about her. I was terrible in art, but it didn't seem to matter! The school has always been a majestic landmark in Warren. I just wished they hadn't made us wait outside on mornings when it was -15 degrees.

I came across your blog as a result of the Warren PA facebook page.
Anyhow, I came across this post about Jeff Buckley and thought you might find it interesting that I met Jeff when he recorded and mixed this album at the studio I worked at in NYC.
We Warren folk are all over the place!

Definitely a huge tragedy and loss. Oddly, the engineer for this album was Andy Wallace. Who also was the mix engineer for Kurt Cobain (Nirvana) and Shannon Hoon (Blind Melon). It couldn't have been easy for him. 3 great artists passing in such a short time. Andy is pictured on the cover of the Blind Melon album "Soup".

great read as i remeber all this but the biggest surprise was when I realized who wrote this! Grew up at St. Pauls - both Water street and Conewango ave and graduated with your brother Dale in that famous class of 1975.
Your dad both baptized and confirmed me and I was honored to have he and your mom come to my wedding after his retirement.

I really enjoyed reading this! I was a student of both Miss Popielski (Mrs Shields) and Mr Shields. She was my English teacher and to date ranks as one of the best I've encounter (including those I had in under-grad and grad). Mr Shields taught me Algebra II in my 9th grade year. He was also an excellent teacher.

I also happen to know the son who posted above (although I am sure he wouldn't remember me as I was much younger)

Again-thank you for sharing your memories.

These are beautieful, could you post pics of the Beaty Mansion across from the Playground, and maybe a pic from 11 Wilson Street, it was a pre-fab that my Grandfather ordered and put together from the Sears and Roebuck Catalog over 70-80 years ago

By the way, I am the son of Miss Popielski and Mr. Shields. Both of them are now retired, but I'm continuing the teaching tradition in our family. I, too, taught briefly at Beaty, subbing there in 1985, and teaching summer school a few years ago. Still a great place!
