The past two Mondays have found me less enthusiastic about going to work. I'm looking forward to a time when I'm not tied to a "real" job, when I can depend upon JoAnna's considerable earning power to the lifestyle we now find so comfortable How big an income do we really need anyhow?

In spite of our getting to bed late, we're still up at our usual time. No sleeping in for Mom and Dad with two young 'uns needing attention. We do have a lazy day, though. I can't get into the latest book I'm reading -- Force Majeure -- a preposterously overrated first novel with a Hollywood setting. I spend a little time outside tidying up the yard and thinking about the bigger projects that need to be done before the snow flies. Just before bedtime, JoAnna and I revise our household needs list.

JoAnna does housework in the morning, then objects to my plan to mow the lawn. But I do it anyway, enjoying the fresh air and minor exercise. I also take Andy and Eddie to the park. More fresh air.
Dressed to the nines, JoAnna and I leave for Milwaukee at 4:30 for the Children's Hospital fundraiser at the Country Club. Once we arrive, I find myself in a strange world where money talks, fashion stalks, and ladies squawk. Fortunately, the bar serves gin. The fashion show is probably the highlight of the evening.

Payday. I debate with my Evil Twin how to do errands. When to cash my check. Where to go to lunch. How many side trips to make. I'm on my way to the City Station credit union office when I decide to find out where the Hill Farms branch is located. Then I pick up my tux.
After buying a newspaper, I decide that, yeah, I will have lunch at the food court at the Mall. I pass on a search for tunes from 1963 and then return to the library after a 2-hour absence. My Evil Twin would have settled for nothing less than the entire afternoon off.
JoAnna is at Lake Geneva and not expected back until 8.

I missed the first episode, but a lot of my friends were buzzing over it at school the next day. I much preferred the show that preceded the Beverly Hillbillies on CBS's Wednesday schedule.
Even better was the 9:30 offering, but with a morning paper route, Mom made sure I was in bed by 9:30. (I was never the easiest person to wake up back then.)

I review my budget presentation to the Finance Committee three or four times, highlighting key phrases with a yellow magic marker and adding a few key words in the margins. I take a couple of hours off during the afternoon and spend most of that time playing with Andy. I'm scheduled for 6:45 but from previous years, I know the Police Chief will need more than his allotted time. I feel fairly relaxed as I start my presentation, but I'm way too focused on taking care of business when a compliment from Tom Ullsvik goes right by me.

After a couple of hours on the telephone, mostly dealing with the problem of rescheduling the next LINK meeting, I go to the dentist for the first time in more than two years. I am amazed to learn that it's been that long. I felt a need to avoid Brad after his repeated offers to join the Optimists.
On the way home to get my hair cut, I stop at home to relieve myself.
At the library, I have a follow-up conversation with Julie Brunnette over the phone. Now I feel better.
I pick up Andy at daycare, and once we get home, get into some chores.
Thanks to the famous Crescent School, he's got a high paying career in television
The building is still there at 500 Pacific Street in Brooklyn, New York, but I'm sure the school is long gone.

Andy has a doctor's appointment -- an annual check-up -- with Dr. Ellis. He wants to leave early so he can play with the toys. He's such an energetic and friendly guy during the entire visit, a real charmer in his own special way. He's grown 2 1/2 inches and gained 5 pounds in the past year. He's in the 75th percentile in both categories.
After dropping him off at daycare (and observing a puzzling mood change), I stop at Original Pancake House for a late, very late, breakfast.
Busy, busy night at the library. Seats are at a premium.

Jim was born in Evansville, Indiana in 1925; in 1950 after reading about bonsai in garden magazines he ordered a book entitled "How to Grow Living Miniature Ming Trees at home" by John Kiktavi and four packets of seeds form National Nursery Supply in Inglewood, California. The seeds germinated but none of them ever became a bonsai [oops!] but it did start a "love affair" with bonsai.

All morning (and not to mention through most of the weekend) I mentally prepare myself for a meeting with Julie Brunnette. I expect to address a need for a general library overview, but she's interested in the specifics of the Dane County reimbursement for nonresident use. I'm less than pleased with my efforts and what is worse, Julie has to leave for another appointment before I can fully explain the cross-municipal aspect of the formula. At least I don't get the feeling that she's out to gut the library budget.
I get home just as supper is being served and convince Andy to join us rather than watch cartoons.

I remain housebound for most of the day. JoAnna shops for a dress for next weekend's formal dinner in Milwaukee and buys groceries. By midafternoon, I feel a need to exercise. I do ten counts of arm raises with my hand weights, then go back to reading my book.
After we eat and I clean the kitchen, I watch TV and read, sinking deeper into the cushion of lethargy.

I get up early with JoAnna -- she has a meeting to attend in Milwaukee -- which gives me an early start on chores. My body is dragging in spite of the burst of productivity; I still feel the need for an unbroken night's sleep.
And then there is the omnipresent Barb, who after eight months in Middleton does not venture out into the world. We might as well be living in Hurley for all the advantages she's taken of her current situation. Anyway, when JoAnna calls around one, I'm a little bit short with her. I take Andy and Eddie to the park, and then spend the rest of the afternoon sackin' out with a book.
JoAnna and I attend a party for Rick Phelps at the renovated Leonard property.

Today's a slow day at the library from opening to closing. During my lunch break, I get measured for a tux and buy the dark-brown crewneck sweater I saw at Land's End yesterday. JoAnna and I visit Larry and Martha at St. Mary's Hospital. It's like walking through a maze trying to find their room. On the way home, we pick up three fish dinners at Crandall's. I read and watch one inning of the Braves-Dodgers game.
