I'm looking forward to the end of the day.  No more interviews and a decision made.  I spend most of the morning organizing my notes, handouts, and other materials for April's Reference Interview ETN.  I realize what a breeze this program is going to be.  Except for a couple of exercise sheets, I have all the material.  During my lunch break, I go on what amounts to a wild goose chase for JoAnna.

The afternoon starts out on a positive note.  Vincent conducts a very strong, albeit overly dramatic, storytime.  He does songs, fingerplays, and a flannelboard story.  The two books he reads are almost an aside, incidental to his otherwise supercharged performance.  Then comes the interview. Vincent holds us hostage for two hours.  I didn't we were ever going to be able to leave the conference room.  Here is a candidate who on the verge of blowing away the competition talked his way out of a job.  No way could I work with such a motormouth.

I left the library with a severe headache and drove to Kids Play to pick up the boys.  Eddie has adjusted so well to his daytime surroundings.  No more teary greetings.

While JoAnna is conducting a campaign committee meeting, Andy and I seclude ourselves in the master bedroom.  I let a couple of martinis melt away the frustrations of an uneven day.  A high point, though, is calling Eve and leaving a very enthusiastic message on her answering machine. She calls back within an hour, obviously pleased with our choice.  At bedtime, I tell Andy the story of the three bears for the 326th time and then we act goofy and giggle until JoAnna looks in on us. I keep Andy up until 10.

A partial morning off.  I have an 11 o'clock appointment with Pat to have my hair cut.  My free time is spent at the computer, inputting calendar squares from early 1987.  JoAnna's pregnant; I'm bored.  I still miss the freedom of Oshkosh, the exhilarating bike rides, the crazy Tuesday night, the late-night solitary highs.

Deb is today's interview candidate.  Considering the fact that she's already been offered two jobs this year, both Liz and I are expecting a big-gun showing.  It doesn't happen.  Deb is so overcome with a case of nerves that she can manage only the briefest of answers to our questions.  She doesn't put the slightest dent into Eve's or Diane's chances.

The board meeting is a very useful and productive 2-hour session.  Sandy Allen appears to be very supportive of the library's needs, specifically in the areas of staffing and materials.  Now I have mixed feelings about John Schaffer's candidacy.  I think I'd rather have Sandy go to the mat against Julie and Don.

Another long day.  I meet with Liz, Sheila, and Chris for two hours.  The discussion of the appropriate behavior policy is not as time-consuming as I thought it would be.  As for the director evaluation pilot, they give the image questionnaire an emphatic thumbs-down.  I wonder how the board will react to that.

Lisa Landsdorf is the third candidate to be interviewed for the children's librarian position, and she is definitely the weakest of the three.  Her interview style needs a lot of polish.  I work til 9.

I look forward to the drive alone to the South Central Library System office, groovin' on some 80s tunes, but this opportunity for solitude is overruled when Peg Hilliker and Sheila shoos away her ride.  I'm sitting in my office like I'm there for the day.  It's natural for Sheila to think the meeting is at Middleton.  Actually I don't mind the company, but Peg does have a bad scent to her.

The afternoon is taken up with Eve Larkin's interview.  She conducts a professional, very assured storytime though she tends to ramble during the interview itself.  Nonetheless, there is not much outside of personality to distinguish her suitability for the position from Diane.

During the evening, I work the reference desk and attend the council meeting.  No fireworks tonight.

January 29, 1992

#10 on the Billboard Hot 100

I've been so eager to keyboard past calendar boxes into our new computer that I find myself neglecting the present.  Tonight I make some sort of wild mis-stroke which narrows the margins drastically.  In my frustration, I end up linking all of my calendar files together but somehow manage to clear up the problem by the time I turn off the power.

Andy makes the strangest remark.

"You make me sad, Dad."

Because of my ranting at the computer?

Because I left him all alone to watch TV in the bedroom?

Earlier in the day, Diane Peterson interview for the children's librarian position and does very well. But I don't think we'll see her come to Middleton.  I'm sure she is making substantially more than we can offer.

I get to work early and complete the list of questions we will use for the interviews.  It's not as agonizing a task as I though it would be.

After a fairly productive day, I pick up the boys at daycare.  JoAnna has a series of evening commitments and isn't expected back until 10 or so.  After giving both boys a bath -- separately -- I lose myself on the computer.  When JoAnna returns home, Andy is still up.
