October 23, 1991

I meet with Pete Hamon, Julie and Phyllis at the SCLS office to review Pete's draft of the "sugar daddy" alternative to automation.  After about two hours of discussion, Julie works herself up into a lather over Pete's alleged used-up credibility.  He reacts as though he's just been punched in the stomach.  Automation planning seems to do strange things to people.

The afternoon at Middleton is uneventful.  At 5, I make an appearance at the Finance Committee meeting to withdraw the capital budget request, which better not turn out to be premature, and make a plea for the library's decision items.

I pick up Andy at daycare.  About 9 or so, I fix myself a deluxe burger and then veg out for the rest of game 4 of the World Series.

No freedom to do what I want this morning.  Advisory meeting at Sun Prairie, and as I walk back to my car, I focus on Niemi's ponderings regarding Madison's '92 library budget.  No money for automation.  What does this mean?  I leave a message with Julie, and she calls me back when I'm in the middle of a meeting with Sharon and Liz.  We touch base shortly before 5, and she volunteers to investigate.  Now that Middleton's city budget process has been officially announced, I focus my energy on the final draft of the long-range plan and a first draft of a 1992 budget proposal.  Photocopying chores delay my return home until halfway through Green Acres.  Everyone's in bed, waiting for Daddy to come home.  What fun to be a family

March 19, 1991

I'm up no earlier than other Tuesdays.  With a shortened workday yesterday, I've cut into class-preparation and note-reflection time.  Does it matter?  I don't think so.  First of all, let me confess that I covered only two-thirds of the materials, but that's only because I tried to cram too much information into an abbreviated session. The growing concern that I have is the inappropriateness of the ETN format for type of class I'm teaching.  Sometimes I wonder how near to death I'm boring my students.

After class, I walk to Madison Public to confer with Julie about the Automation Task Force agenda.  I also visit JoAnna at her office.  Due to last night's row, we are still tentative around each other.
