(Lost New York) Hotel Astor, Times Square, New York "The Crossroads of the World" (Postcard Series)

The Hotel Astsor opened in 1904 and closed in 1967. Construction of its replacement on the site, originally known as the W. T. Grant Building (headquarters of the now-defunct retailer), started in 1968. The gleaming building is now known as One Astor Place.

Excerpt:   The 200-room Mark Twain Hotel was built in the 1930s. Designed by architect Harry Glube in 1930, the Art Deco-style building was constructed of a beige brick with white terra-cotta accents. The Mark Twain Hotel is in the heart of Chicago's historic Gold Coast Neighborhood, an affluent part of town that expanded greatly after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. The Gold Coast neighborhood is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Hotel Dresden, Flint, Michigan (Postcard Series)

From Flint 1890-1960.  "This hotel at the southwest corner of Third and South Saginaw opened in 1907.  It was built by carriage and auto pioneer William A. Paterson.  The hotel was named after the German city Dresden and was the leading hotel in Flint.  Billy Durant and Benjamin Briscoe had a series of meetings there that led to the formation of General Motors.  The name was later changed to Miler and then to Adams before fire destroyed the building in 1963.

The Raulf Realty Company of Milwaukee constructed the hotel that currently stands here in 1928. The Raulf Hotel contained spaces for eight businesses and offices on the first floor; banquet and meeting rooms, a dining room and tavern on the second floor, a bowling alley in the basement; and 100 hotel rooms and seven apartments on the upper floors. One of many which have stood in Portage, this hotel accommodated the many travelers who came to this busy commercial center. Built in a simple style, the five story red brick building dominates the streetscape.

Excerpt:    The new 422-room resort opened on the site of the historic Royal Palm Hotel and Shorecrest Hotel, both built in the 1930s. In their heydays, the Royal Palm and Shorecrest were two of the most successful, sophisticated hotels on the beach.
