"The Beverly Hillbillies" Debuts on September 26, 1962

Broadcast on CBS.  Wednesday. 9:00 to 9:30 Eastern time.

Ran for 9 years.  The #1 rated show for the 1962-63 and 1963-64 television seasons.  In the top 20 every year except its final one.

I missed the first episode, but a lot of my friends were buzzing over it at school the next day.  I much preferred the show that preceded the Beverly Hillbillies on CBS's Wednesday schedule.

Even better was the 9:30 offering, but with a morning paper route, Mom made sure I was in bed by 9:30.  (I was never the easiest person to wake up back then.)

"The Dick Van Dyke Show" Debuts 50 Years Ago Today

The Dick Van Dyke Show struggled to find an audience during its first season, but after a move from Tuesday to Wednesday, it became one of the most popular shows on TV for its next four seasons.
  • #9 in 1962-63
  • #3 in 1963-64
  • #7 in 1964-65
  • #16 in 1965-66

It also won a slew of Emmy awards:
  •  1961-62
    • Outstanding writing achievement in comedy:  Carl Reiner
  • 1962-63
    • Outstanding program achievement in the field of humor
    • Outstanding writing achievement in comedy:  Carl Reiner
    • Outstanding directorial achievement in comedy:  John Rich
  • 1963-64
    • Outstanding program achievement in the field of comedy
    • Outstanding continued performance by an actor in a series (lead):  Dick Van Dyke
    • Outstanding continued performance by an actress in a series (lead):  Mary Tyler Moore
    • Outstanding writing achievement in comedy or variety:  Carl Reiner, Sam Denoff, and Bill Persky
    • Outstanding directorial achievement in comedy:  Jerry Paris
  • 1964-65
    • Outstanding program achievement in entertainment
  • 1965-66
    • Outstanding comedy series
    • Outstanding continued performance by an actor in a series (lead):  Dick Van Dyke
    • Outstanding continued performance by an actress in a series (lead):  Mary Tyler Moore
    • Outstanding writing achievement in comedy or variety:  Carl Reiner, Sam Denoff, and Bill Persky

And it remains one of my favorite shows of all time, as funny and watchable now as when it was during its first run.
